WFMW: What you NEED to buy in bulk
This week, we're having a themed Works for Me Wednesday - we are all sharing our Frugal Tips! I've thought and schemed and pondered...and decided that I would share with y'all the list of things that you really OUGHT to be buying at a warehouse/Costco type store, if you buy them at all.
(BBJ, last Spring. Turns out my whole list has to do with baking...and I couldn't resist re-running this picture.)
1. Yeast - I can get a bag of Yeast that will last me for about a year of weekly bread-making for about $7. For the same price, at my local grocery store, I can get a small jar of yeast that will last me for about a month.
2. Baking Powder - About $3. Again, same price as the container at the grocery store. Difference is that the one at Costco is about 1 lb of baking powder. It lasts for a long time, and I plan on making a lot of muffins and quick breads with it!
3. Baking Soda - Again, several dollars...but I have enough baking soda to use it in my household cleaning, laundry AND baking! (About 4 pounds. One cup, added to my wash, replaces the expensive and waxy dryer sheets I used to use. )
4. Vanilla - $7 gets me a bottle of vanilla extract, really good Madagascar vanilla extract that is HUGE compared to the little dinky bottle at the grocery store!
5. In-season fruits and vegetables - When a vegetable is at the peak of its season, it's pretty hard to beat the price you can find at Costco, pound per pound. Yes, it's hard to use 5 pounds of asparagus...but, seriously? You can eat asparagus every night for a week. It only comes around for three or four weeks out of the year! I think that's cause for an asparagus celebration!!
That's what I've got for you today, folks. Just a few things that I feel silly buying anywhere else.

What a great list. I love to get that stuff at Costco!
ReplyDeleteMy WFMW is about Feeding the Freezer (with food that is on sale of course).
Ah, don't forget the freezer staples! Shredded cheese (parmesan, mozzarella, cheddar), ground beef, pepperoni (for really cheap pizzas), and 10 pound bags of nuts. Yes,I keep all those in my freezer :)
ReplyDeleteThat is a great list. We only have a Sam's Club, and I'm one of *those* people who thinks WalMart is evil, so I don't go there. (Except for prescriptions that I have to pay cash for - they're the cheapest pharmacy around and you don't have to be a member. It almost makes me feel like I'm one up on them or something! lol)
ReplyDeleteIf we had a Costco, I think I'd do that.
I do order foods through Azure, which is a bulk organic food company that drops off orders in our town once a month. I wish their vanilla was more affordable. I need to stop using anything with vanillin if I want to see if "petro-free" does my toddler and me any good. I think I'll make vanilla. Which means I have to go to the Liquor Store! Never been there! lol
I wish I had a Costco for the yeast alone. Imagine how much I use at 1 to 2 loaves a day!
ReplyDeleteGreat list. I love Costco!
ReplyDeleteGreat list! I've been meaning to shop at Costco more often, and this gives me a little more motivation.
ReplyDeleteThat is a great list.
ReplyDeleteIt sure gives me something to think about! I don't go to Costco, because I think it overwhelms me a little, which is silly. Perhaps it is time to rethink.
