This has been floating around in my head for a few weeks..I've just GOT to share. Remember, this is just what works for ME...I can't make any promises!
Here goes. I'm a Diaper Expert. I've got two kids under the age of three, and they're both still in diapers. (You may now proceed to both Pity Me and Bow Before My Wisdom.)
When BBJ was born, we made sure we had all the Gear. This included a second-hand Diaper Champ that we picked up from a local 2nd Hand sale. It was clean, odor free, and promised the same for my nursery!
Ummm...Epic Fail. Any of you with any sort of a diaper pail know what I'm talking about. It's fine when the thing's shut, but - seriously? - actually removing the diapers from the pail might kill you!
Here's what I found out - diapers placed in a plastic-lined wastebasket, with no lid, gave off a lot less odor. Hardly any, in fact. (I use grocery sacks.) My guess is that they weren't all inside baking, so...a lot less odor. Besides that, a plastic lined wastebasket holds a lot less than your average Diaper Champ, so the diapers have a lot less time to...ripen?
Finally, look at the fine-print on your box of diapers. The chances are really good that there's a little snippet on there somewhere that instructs you to "empty solids into a toilet before disposing." Ever seen that on there? Trust me - empty whatever you can into a toilet before you chuck your diaper into your open, plastic-lined wastebasket, and everything will smell MUCH better.
So, that's what works for me! For more great tips, head over to We Are THAT Family!

We don't use a diaper pail either!
ReplyDeleteI used our Diaper Champ for a few weeks while I was using cloth with Bronson. We used it once with disposables and I almost threw up when I opened it. No more.
Umm.. my breakfast looks a lot less appetizing now. Thanks, Aunt Lolo! ;)
ReplyDeleteIts the ripening time. My kids went on vacation with the grandparents for a month. My husband forgot to empty the diaper pail , when they came back and I had to empty the pail it made me quite ill.
ReplyDeleteMy diaper champ is sitting outside and hasn't been used since the 2 month of my daughter's life. EWWWWW I couldn't take it anymore. I now, just throw them away in my garbage, or for the stinky ones I put them in a grocery bag and take them outside to the garbage. Those things suck!
ReplyDeleteI have a giveaway and a great opportunity for moms going on over at my blog, so make sure you come on over!!!
I COMPLETELY agree with you!! I, too, use a small plastic trash can with a grocery-plastic-bag in it!! I also use cloth diapers, but I do this for disposable or cloth (as well as wet clothes/sheets from accidents now).
ReplyDeleteI have a diaper genie... used it ONCE. hated it!!! (sorry to my dad, 'cause he paid full price for that darn thing!)
I also do not recommend a wet diaper pail for cloth diapers. Grosses.Me.Out.

I put diapers in a little wastebasket, too. But I've NEVER seen that on my diaper box! Hmmm...
ReplyDeleteWe have a diaper pail and it was great for the first few months since we were changing her so much

yes with disposables we always empty the diapers in the toilet. seems to help with the ripening.
ReplyDeletewe have the diaper champ as a replacement to our first diaper pail and i hated it the day we bought it.
I'm an open wastebasket gal myself...so off to check the fine print on the diaper boxes. SERIOUSLY though? Couldn't they make that LARGE print, aren't Moms supposed to be sleep deprived? Why make it small fine print?
